How to Select the Best String Trimmer Line

Trimmer with string line on grass

The market is flooded with replacement trimmer line options – but how do you know which one is right for your machine? Read on through our buyer’s guide to help you head in the right direction.

Types of Line

Trimmer lines don’t just come in one style or type – there are actually several different designs that you should be aware of before making your purchase.

Which one you choose depends on both which style is compatible with your trimmer, and the particular results you want to get out of it – or how tough the job actually is.

Round or Cylindrical Line

This is the least durable of all the lines. You’ll usually find this type comes with basic or entry-level trimmers or the cheaper corded tools.

These default lines are still the most popular as a result, and most people won’t switch them up for anything else.

More suited for lighter grass and weeded areas, it’s perfectly fine for most homeowners and casual users. It’s easy to change and is compatible with most trimmers on the market.

The rounded line is the most prone to welding together in hot environments.

Square Line

This line will stand up to obstacles a little more than the rounded line. This is ideal if you have a slightly tougher groundcover to tackle.

The multiple sides can handle thicker undergrowth, while the surface of the line will distribute force and ensure it doesn’t break nearly as much.

Try it on tougher weeds, stronger grass, and even some roots – especially if you’re close to concrete or other hard obstacles.

Star or Triangular Line

This line might not have the same durability that a square line has, but it is much more aerodynamic.

This ensures that it can do the job faster and more efficiently. However, it is prone to breakage, so you need to decide the best option to trade-off.

The star-shaped line is also recommended for hotter weather – as it doesn’t weld together as much as a round or square line due to the reduced surface area.

Spiral or Twisted Line

This will be ideal if you’re looking to limit the noise level. It still very cuts well, but more often than not you’ll find noise-reducing trimmer lines are of the spiral design.

Vibrations are reduced too, so you get a strong, efficient cut and a more pleasant user experience.

You’ll find that many professionals use this type of trimmer line on their jobs.

Serrated or Bladed Line

This line is really only reserved for the toughest of weeds or grass. Or if you have a large amount of land to cover.

It’s designed to bite and cut through harder foliage, and with a little bit of extra power, you can make mincemeat of even the most stubborn section of your lawn.

It’s also probably the best string trimmer line for edging – if you want to use your machine for such a task.

Edging? Don’t know what that is? Read this article that talks all about the differences and similarities of Edger vs Trimmer.

In choosing the right type of line, take a reconnaissance mission around your yard and examine the kind of undergrowth and terrain you’re most likely going to be cutting back.

You can then make an educated guess as to which line you require – but sometimes the best way to find out is good old trial and error.

Trimmer on green grass

Before you even think about adding a product to the cart, first you must identify which replacement trimmer line is going to work with your machine.

If only every consumer just took a little bit of extra care in this department, stress and frustration would significantly decrease – as would the number of negative feedback.

It’s up to you to find out which spool fits your trimmer. Always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions before you place an order.

Remember – it doesn’t necessarily have to come from the OEM (original equipment manufacturer). In fact, many third-party trimmer line sources are much better than what your machine was supplied with.

Just make sure it fits. When in doubt, ask around, check the reviews and see if anyone else has your model.

It’ll save you a lot of headaches in the future.

Line Length

Trimmer line comes in different lengths, and if you’re purchasing it pre-spooled there will be a set length on each spool.

Buying line in bulk on a larger spool is useful for getting exactly the right length of line you need, but it is much more effort to manually replace on your trimmer.

While lots of lines might look attractive, and big spools at cheaper prices can be tempting – ask yourself how good the line actually is.

If it’s poor quality, it’s not going to be that cost-effective when you’re having to replace it twice as much as a better quality product that comes in a shorter length.

Line Diameter

You will notice that a string trimmer line comes in a variety of different diameters, and much like the line length, it also plays a significant part in the smooth operation of your trimmer and the type of job you’re using it for.

It’s not rocket science here – the tougher the undergrowth, grass, groundcover or weeds that you’re cutting – the thicker the line has to be.

You’ll find that strimmer line is available in three different diameter ranges- detailed as follows:

  • 0.60-0.80 inches for cutting smaller weeds and light grass cover around a residential household.
  • 0.85-0.110 inches for cutting medium/thicker weeds and foliage.
  • 0.110 inches + for heavy-duty jobs, the toughest weeds, large areas, and commercial landscaping.

Remember that not all string trimmers are compatible with all diameters of line. Refer to the manufacturer’s instructions before you purchase a product that doesn’t fit.

For the most part and as a rule of thumb, household tools such as lightweight corded electric trimmers will only take up to 0.80 inches of thickness, while commercial-grade equipment will be compatible with anything over 0.110.

The happy medium seems to be 0.095 – which is why many people search for the best .095 string trimmer line available. For most trimming work around the home, this is a solid go-to option and is usually all you’ll need.

String trimmer line is most commonly made from plastic. It’s relatively cheap and readily available, but it is prone to breakages.

Many regular gardeners and landscape professionals have experienced a common issue of it melting in hot weather. (See below for tips to combat this).

One way to avoid that is obviously to try a different material. Nylon polymers are a slightly better option, as some lines might be reinforced internally to make it more durable.

It’s also available in aluminum versions. Such material is obviously a lot more expensive, but they’ll also last longer, are more fuel-efficient, and offer improved cutting performance that can save you money in the long run.

Question mark on a chalkboard

Why Does My Trimmer Line Keep Breaking?

This could be down to a number of factors that are preventing you from enjoying a smooth cutting experience.

The most common reasons include cutting too fast, and not using the right type of line for the thickness of the weeds and grass.

Cutting against hard surfaces like fence posts, concrete walkways, or stones and rocks will also snap your trimmer line in a heartbeat.

Ease off the throttle – it doesn’t have to be spinning at full pelt to get the job done in most cases.

At the same time, don’t jump right into the undergrowth with the trimmer head – you’re aiming to use the very tip of the line, so gently introduce from the side into the area you’re looking to cut.

If you are coming up against obstacles, again, ease the trimmer into the area. Remember that breakages are going to be inevitable.

Another consideration is that your line is too old and has become brittle. If that’s the case then you need to replace it.

How Can I Improve The Life Of My String Trimmer Line?

There are a number of tips and tricks you can use to ensure your string lasts longer and is more cost-effective as a result.

Perhaps the most important is that you use the trimmer correctly. Any misuse of this tool is likely to bring all kinds of problems, including damage to your machine, your yard, the string line and even yourself.

Keep the trimmer level and cut the grass from top to bottom – shaving it down a little at a time. Never just go straight in.

Try to avoid running the line at full throttle – for the most part, you won’t need full power and you’ll only shorten the life of the line.

Make sure you’re using the correct spool and line size. You’ll go through the line much faster if the type isn’t suited to the job you’re doing.

Professional tip – always soak your trimmer line for 24 hours before use. The line will become less brittle, it will improve the cut and at the same time, the trick is very useful for preventing deterioration from heat.

And speaking of heat – never leave your line in a hot place or in direct sunlight. Store your line in a cool, dark place and it will last much longer.

How Do I Tell What Trimmer Line Is Compatible With My Machine?

The easiest way is to refer to the manufacturer’s instructions. That should tell you exactly the kind of line your trimmer is compatible with.

If for some reason it doesn’t, or if you’ve misplaced the instructions, then you should be able to find the answer online. Check to see what lines other owners of your machine are using.

For extra peace of mind – consider contacting the makers of the line to confirm if it will fit your trimmer model.

What Is The Best Trimmer Line?

It depends entirely on the job you’re doing, the trimmer you’re using and how dense or thick the groundcover you need to cut actually is.

Luckily, you’ve come to the right place to find out. Check the reviews to see which line gets the best praise.

Refer back to the types of line – and their diameters – to find out which one best suits the job you need to do.

In this game, though, there really is no substitute for trial and error. You might have to give a few options a go before you settle on the best trimmer line for you.

How Do I Change My Trimmer Line?

How you change your trimmer line will depend on the type of trimmer head your model features, but for the most part, they’re all pretty much the same.

Again, the manufacturer’s instructions should tell you exactly how to do this job for that particular trimmer.

For a more visual reference, refer to the short but very clear and informative video below for an excellent guide to re-stringing your trimmer.

What’s The Best Trimmer Line Diameter To Use?

It depends on the type of job you’re doing – but simply use a thicker line for thicker undergrowth, weeds, and grass.

Likewise, if you’re undertaking a lengthy job, such as a large yard, estate, roadside edges, or even golf courses, for example, you’ll need a much thicker and more heavy-duty line.

For most residential use, a good 0.095 diameter is commonly the best suggestion. But thinner lines will work just as well for light coverage.

Is Thicker Trimmer Line Better?

Again, it depends on the job.

In many cases – yes it is. It will cut down tougher weeds and grass while lasting longer with more durability.

However, it’s usually more expensive and might not actually be compatible with your trimmer.

Why Does The String Trimmer Line Come In Different Shapes?

Each line shape offers a different performance when it comes to cutting.

This can range from having the ability to cut thicker foliage, being more fuel-efficient, decreasing the likelihood of it welding or melting, and even reducing the noise levels of the trimmer.

Refer to the line shape guide above for more detailed information

Is Trimmer Line Universal?

Certain types of trimmer line can be used in many different makes and models of trimmer.

Where a line is made by the OEM (Official Equipment Manufacturer), it’s likely that it will only support tools made under that particular brand.

All manufacturers will try to convince you to use their own, branded-line, often claiming that the machine won’t work unless you use official parts and replacements for it.

However, this is far from the truth, and many third party lines are far superior to use as a new string trimmer line.

If you’re in any doubt – don’t be afraid to ask around, or leave me a comment and I’ll do my best to get back to you. The internet is your friend.

How Does Trimmer Line Impact The Environment?

A very good question and something that people are becoming more aware of in this day and age.

Trimmer line breaks easily and regularly as you cut through your garden weeds, grass, and other such groundcovers. As a result, you’re constantly spewing tiny pieces of plastic all over your yard.

While this might seem harmless – it actually isn’t. It is easily transported into watercourses and often ends up in the oceans as microplastics.

With an estimated 90 million line trimmers in operation around the world – both commercial and residential – that’s a lot of plastic waste that can get eaten by wildlife and damage the ecosystem.

To combat this, you need to try and limit how much line you’re using and how often you’re using it.

Buy the most durable line you can, don’t use too much power, take care around hard obstacles, and always clean up after yourself where possible.

This is where brightly colored and luminous line is a real advantage – it’s much easier to see if you’re being diligent about practicing good cleanup.

Are There Any String Trimmer Alternatives?

Biodegradable string lines are on the market, but at the moment they simply don’t offer comparable performance and are just not as durable or long-lasting as other lines.

Chain trimmers and steel blades are available (although they’ve been banned in the EU). They’re usually only used for very heavy-duty commercial jobs and are far too much for most residential work.

The only real alternative is an old-school, manual, long-handle grass shears.

They have come a long way since the rusty pair your grandfather had in his shed – so consider that option – especially if you have a smaller or more manageable yard.

Wow. String trimmer line. Who would have thought it was such a complex world?!

I hope you’ve learned as much as I did in researching this article and you’ve found the best string trimmer line for your needs.

If it were up to me (and I had a compatible trimmer) I’d opt for one of the Cyclone line products. I’ve heard from a variety of landscaping pros that they make the best string line for trimmers out there.

Do you agree? Let me know which product you would choose and why.

Happy trimming!
